Veteran Support Grant (VSG)

The National Guard Association of Michigan’s (NGAM) Veteran Support Grant (VSG) is dedicated to providing financial assistance to Michigan’s military service members and their families during critical times of unexpected need. As veterans, we understand the cost and sacrifice of service and recognize that one of our nation’s greatest assets are those who wore the uniform and the families who served alongside them. No matter the branch of service, we are here to support you. When these brave men and women face personal hardships, the NGAM VSG is here to help.

WHO Qualifies

Veterans and Service Members: Any currently serving, retired, or separated military member residing in Michigan is eligible. Membership in NGAM is not required. Applicants must have completed, at a minimum, basic training and can be from any branch of the military.

Dependents: Un-remarried surviving spouses or legal dependents of a veteran in need of assistance may apply. Proof of dependency and the veteran’s status must be provided. Legal dependency for a child ends upon emancipation, marriage, high school graduation (if not pursuing higher education), college graduation (if pursuing higher education), or at age 24 if still in college. Children who are physically or mentally handicapped and unable to support themselves, as confirmed by medical evidence, are considered legal dependents if the condition was diagnosed before age 18.

The grant process

The NGAM Veteran Support Grant involves a two-stage approval process, typically taking 45-60 days once a completed and accurate application is received. A reviewing committee first evaluates the application to determine the veteran’s needs, then forwards a recommendation to the board of directors for final approval and fund distribution.

Application Tips:

  • Be specific and detailed about your situation and needs. Clearly state what support you need from the grant to increase the chances of approval.
  • Provide a comprehensive picture of your financial situation, including proof of income and all bills.
  • Ensure your budget sheet matches the evidence provided.
  • For work or repairs, include quotes from at least two sources (only one estimate is needed for dental work). Additional documents such as proof of vehicle insurance, property tax bills, home value, mortgage costs, lease agreements, or registration may be required.
  • Contractors and mechanics must provide proof of a state license and insurance before any funds are released. These documents can be sent directly to the VSG committee at vsg@ngam.org.

Payment Process:

  • The VSG pays bills or estimates directly on your behalf. Ensure all documents are clear, legible, and include detailed payment statements.
  • The VSG generally does not cover expenses like groceries, childcare, or non-essential services but may consider them as supporting evidence of need and provide additional resources if necessary.

Important Notes:

  • Each application is unique. Follow the instructions carefully and provide all required documents.
  • Incomplete or inaccurate applications are the main reason for delays or denials. It’s better to include more information than less.
  • The VSG committee will contact you for clarity if there are questions or gaps in your application, but this will delay the process.
  • You may be asked about your ability to sustain financial health after the grant is awarded, as the VSG is designed to help with emergency needs.

Privacy and Follow-Up:

  • Your identity and personal information are protected throughout the process. No personal details are disclosed outside the reviewing committee.
  • If awarded the grant, you may be asked to provide a testimonial, photos, or a description of how the assistance benefited you and your family.

For any questions or clarifications, contact the VSG committee at vsg@ngam.org.
